Tar Heel Women's Lacrosse Falls In NCAA Quarterfinals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Fifth-ranked Loyola limited No. 4 North Carolina to just one second half goal and held on to defeat the Tar Heels, 7-5, in NCAA Tournament quarterfinal action on Sunday afternoon at Henry Stadium on the UNC campus. With the victory, the Greyhounds advance to next weekend's NCAA Final Four in Trenton, N.J., where they will face top seed and five-time defending national champion Maryland on Friday evening. Maryland defeated Georetown in College Park, Md., on Sunday afternoon to advance to the Final Four.
Loyola's defense dominated much of the game, holding the Tar Heels scoreless in a stretch of 37:05 between UNC's fourth goal with 14:17 left in the first half and its final goal with 7:12 left in the second half. Greyhound goalkeeper Tricia Dabrowski played brilliantly in the cage, holding Carolina to just five goals and an 0-for-4 effort on free position shots. Dabrowski recorded nine saves.
"This is an exciting win for the Greyhounds," Loyola head coach Diane Aikens said after the game. "We're very proud and very excited to be going to the Final Four. I thought Tricia played great in the goal. I think she's the best goalkeeper in the country right now. Our defense has been a strength all year, and it was again today."
Tar Heel goalkeeper Melissa Coyne also played very well, recording 10 saves and limiting Loyola to seven goals on 23 shots. However, the UNC offense was limited to five goals and did not convert any of its four free position shot opportunities.
"I thought we had a great effort defensively, but our offense couldn't get it done," said Carolina head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy. "Tricia Dabrowski played great in the goal. They really disrupted our offensive rhythm. We only had five goals today, and you have to score more than five goals if you want to win."
Loyola's Kory Miller led all scorers with three goals in the game, while Stacey Morlang had two goals for the Greyhounds. Christine McPike had two goals and an assist for UNC, while Kellie Thompson had a goal and an assist. Kristin Off had two assists for the Tar Heels.
Carolina scored the first goal of the game less than five minutes into the contest when McPike scored off an assist from Thompson. Miller and Morlang then scored back-to-back goals to give Loyola a 2-1 lead with 23:15 left in the first half. Thompson scored off an assist by Off to tie the game at 2-2 and Amy Havrilla scored off a McPike assist for a 3-2 UNC lead with 21:27 left before halftime. Miller and Morlang then each scored again for a 4-3 lead for the Greyhounds. Carolina tied it at 4-4 when Meghann Mohler took a pass from Off and scored with 14:17 left in the opening half.
UNC would not score again until there was just 7:12 left in the game. Meanwhile, Loyola took a 5-4 lead into halftime when Jen Testrake scored on a free position shot with 3:10 left in the first half. Miller scored on a free position shot a minute into the second half, and Danielle Battersby added an unassisted insurance goal with 12:59 left.
Carolina completes its 2000 season with a record of 12-6. Loyola improves to 16-4 on the year.
