Tar Heel Women's Lacrosse Wins at UMass, 12-6

AMHERST, Mass. -- Erin McInnes scored three times and had an assist and Meghann Mohler scored three times as the No. 6-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team won on the road at the University of Massachusetts, 12-6, Friday afternoon at Garber Field. Kellie Thompson, UNC's top scorer on the season, had a goal and three assists in the win.
Carolina controlled the play in the first half en route to a 5-0 halftime lead. Mohler and McInnes each scored a pair of goals with Lindsay Stone netting the other Tar Heel score.
The second half was more evenly played as the Minutewomen began to put some pressure on the UNC net after only managing three first half shots. Pavlick opened the second half scoring when she found the back of the cage on a high shot at the 25:43 mark. The Tar Heels responded with a goal less than a minute later to take a 6-1 lead.
UMass attacker Fay Naber then netted two straight goals to cut the UNC lead to 6-3. McInnes notched her third of the game followed by another Pavlick goal to make the score 7-4 in favor of UNC with 19:17 remaining. The Tar Heels then put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in less than a minute, opening a 9-4 lead at the 11:06 mark.
UMass Rebecca Minaker scored off a feed from Colleen Wales at the 10:10 mark to cut the Tar Heel lead to four at 9-5. But the Minutewomen could not get any closer as UNC scored three of the final four goals to win, 12-6.
North Carolina improves to 11-5 with the victory, while UMass falls to 7-7 with the loss.
The Tar Heels will play their final game of the 2000 regular season when they visit No. 2 Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
