UNC Women's Tennis Tops Illini, 7-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The 28th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team defeated No. 44 Illinois by a score of 7-2 Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Freshman sensation Marlene Mejia led the Tar Heels with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles. Mejia defeated Simone Kung in singles (6-1, 6-0) and teamed with senior Jessica Zaganczyk to best the Illini duo of Kung and Michelle Webb (8-6).
Carolina (3-5) also fought its way to a pair of three-set wins in singles. Sophomore Caroline Hill defeated Natalia Manasova at No. 4 (6-4, 4-6, 6-2), and junior Courtney Zalinski topped Natasha Loebnitz at No. 5 (6-3, 0-6, 7-5) in thrilling fashion.
"We played very well today. I was happy to see how we fought and got some key wins in singles," UNC head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "The tough matches we played earlier this year are paying off now."
The Heels hope to continue their winning ways when they host the No. 53 Harvard Crimson Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
