CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - On the strength of its five singles wins, North Carolina's 28th-ranked women's tennis team defeated No. 53 Harvard by a score of 5-2 Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The win improved the Tar Heels to 4-5 in dual-match play.
Carolina freshman Marlene Mejia won at No. 1 singles, downing Harvard's Sanaz Ghazal by a score of 6-0, 6-1. The win was Mejia's fourth in a row at No. 1 singles, a stretch that has seen her drop only three games in the four victories. She is now 6-2 in dual-match play and 17-7 overall.
The Heels' other singles wins came from freshman Kendrick Bunn, sophomore Caroline Hill, junior Courtney Zalinski and freshman Kate Pinchbeck.
With the outcome of the match already decided, only one doubles match was contested.
The win was the second in two days for Carolina. The Tar Heels topped No. 44 Illinois Saturday 7-2. UNC hopes to continue its winning streak against No. 36 Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
