CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina field hockey team got goals from five different players Sunday en route to a 10-0 win over visiting Radford University (2-10). The shutout was UNC's third of the season and the 10 goals were the most scored in a single game by the Tar Heels since 1997.
Now 12-1 on the season, the third-ranked Tar Heels travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., on Tuesday to face fourth-ranked Wake Forest. That game will be the third in four days for UNC, which beat No. 8 Princeton 3-2 on Saturday in Norfolk, Va.
Carolina won the season's first matchup with Wake Forest, 3-2, on Sept. 30. Tuesday's game, scheduled for 7 p.m., will not count toward the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
"Tuesday is a huge game for us and it will be a tough one, playing on Wake's home field," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I'm pleased that our kids continue to make progress and I'm proud of the weekend's results."
Against Radford, senior Holly Huff led the way with the first hat trick of her UNC career. Including a goal against Princeton, she totaled four for the weekend, equal to her season total heading into Saturday's game. Huff also added an assist against Radford for a total of seven points.
Junior Carrie Lingo, who hadn't scored a goal in the 2000 season, had two Sunday, one on a first-half penalty corner and one in the second from the field. Junior Katie McDonald, who came into the game with one goal this season, scored two and added an assist. Sophomore Lizzy Duffy also scored two goals, raising her season total to three. Junior Abby Martin started the afternoon's scoring with her fifth goal of the season, on a penalty corner 10 minutes into the game.
