Chapel Hill, N.C. - Five different North Carolina players scored as the No. 1-ranked UNC men's soccer team defeated NC State, 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The seven goals are the most Carolina (14-2, 4-1 ACC) has scored in an Atlantic Coast Conference game since 1962, when it defeated NC State 9-1.
With the win, Carolina improves to 14-2 this season, setting a record for the best start in school history The previous best start was 13-2, set in 1980 and 1981. UNC also improves to 4-1 in the ACC, equalling the school record for most ACC wins in a season, set in 1967 and 1977. Carolina plays its ACC finale on Saturday night at Fetzer Field versus Wake Forest at 7:00 p.m.
ACC Player-of-the-Year candidate Chris Carrieri and senior Caleb Norkus each had two goals and one assist in the game for the Tar Heels, while senior Michael Bucy had a goal and three assists. Carrieri and Norkus each scored at least one goal for the eighth consecutive game, tying a school record set by Todd Haskins in 1993.
Danny Jackson and C.J. Steffen also had goals for UNC, while Logan Pause, Matt Crawford and Mike Gell each had one assist.
Norkus scored the game's first goal just 2:19 into the match off an assist from Bucy. Danny Jackson scored at 11:05 to make it 2-0 on a free kick from just outside the box. Carrieri took a pass from Bucy and scored at 12:57 to make it 3-0, a lead UNC held at halftime.
In the second half, Norkus scored at the 46:17 mark off a Bucy rebound to make it 4-0. It was 5-0 when Bucy scored at 53:22 on assists from Carrieri and Pause. NC State cut the lead to 5-1 at 54:17 when Nick Olivencia collected his own rebound and scored from point-blank range. The Tar Heels added two insurance goals in the last 10 minutes of the game, with Steffen scoring off assists from Gell and Norkus at 82:13 and Carrieri scoring off a Crawford assist at 86:22.
Carolina returns to action on Wednesday night at Fetzer Field for a 7:00 game with Elon.
