
Carolina Field Hockey Earns Shutout Win at Virginia

Charlottesville, VA - Senior forward Kristen McCann scored twice Sunday as the University of North Carolina field hockey team defeated host Virginia 3-0 in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup. The third-ranked Tar Heels are 15-1 overall, 3-0 in the ACC. The 10th-ranked Cavaliers are 9-5, 0-2 in the ACC.
The win was the Tar Heels' fifth shutout of the season and the second in three days. UNC defeated fifth-ranked Michigan 4-0 on Friday.
Sunday, McCann scored the game-winner from the field 1:41 before halftime. The Tar Heels went up 2-0 five minutes into the second half as McCann took a pass from senior Holly Huff and shot it into the cage for her 22nd goal of the season. McCann now has 54 career goals, seventh all-time at UNC.
Senior Jana Toepel scored the final goal for the Tar Heels as she connected on a penalty corner option from senior Erin Cox.
Carolina outshot Virginia 13-9, but the Cavaliers had the advantage in penalty corners, 6-3. UNC returns to action next Sunday, traveling to face top-ranked Maryland in College Park.
