SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Freshman forward Kim Patrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) put the capper on a dream first week in a Tar Heel uniform, scoring two goals to rally the second-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over fifth-ranked Connecticut Sunday afternoon in the third game of Notre Dame's Key Bank Classic at Alumni Stadium.
For the second successive game the Tar Heels had to come from behind to win, but Patrick was there to provide the firepower. She tied the game less than 10 minutes before halftime and then provided the game-winner for the Tar Heels in the 64th minute of play. Last Wednesday, Patrick came off the bench to score two goals in UNC's 3-0 season-opening win over Tennessee. On Friday, in her first starting role, she scored in the 88th minute of play to force overtime with third-ranked Notre Dame and the Tar Heels went on to win 3-2 in the second sudden death overtime period. Coming off the bench again on Sunday, Patrick displayed her nose for the goal again in a big way to allow the Tar Heels to start the season 3-0.
Patrick's exploits have overshadowed a similarly fast start by UNC junior forward Meredith Florance (Dallas, Texas). Florance has scored in each of Carolina's first three games and Friday she had the golden goal in the 115th minute to vanquish the Fighting Irish.
In Sunday's game against UConn (0-2), the Huskies got on the board first when 1998 National Freshman of the Year Mary-Frances Monroe scored at the 20:00 mark. She blasted a shot from 16 yards out that hit the crossbar and bounded into the back of the UNC goal. Monroe's tally was unassisted.
The Huskies held the lead until the 35:23 mark when Patrick tallied her fourth goal of the season on a 15-yard header off a service by junior defender Tina Murphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.). Senior midfielder Beth Sheppard (Houston, Texas) also assisted on the game-tying goal.
The half ended at 1-1 but Patrick provided the game-winner for the Heels at the 63:56 mark. Taking a cross from senior midfielder Lorrie Fair (Los Altos, Calif.), Patrick tapped the ball into an open net from five yards out.
Florance finished off the scoring for UNC with only 33 seconds to play. Her third goal of the season came on a 20-yard blast from the left side that found the upper corner of the net. The goal was assisted by sophomore forward Anne Remy (Norman, Okla.).
Carolina finished the game with 29 shots on goal to seven for Connecticut. Sophomore goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett (Harborcreek, Pa.) came off the bench to spark the UNC defense, playing the last 38:30 of the game and stopping three Connecticut shots. Former UNC goalkeeper Shanna Caldwell, who transferred to Connecticut this past summer, played the whole way for the Huskies, making six saves.
The Tar Heels will return to play next Friday when they play host to the Nike Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field Friday and next Sunday. Friday's games will match Duke against eighth-ranked Penn State at 5 p.m. and North Carolina against Colorado at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Duke will meet Colorado at 1 p.m. and Carolina will face #8 Penn State at 3 p.m. Sunday's game will also mark the 1999 Women's World Cup USA/UNC Super Sunday celebration at Fetzer Field. Fans are urged to arrive early for Sunday's game as a near capacity crowd is expected.
