September 10, 1999 | Women's Soccer
Sept. 10, 1999
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The second-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team fired 17 shots on goal in the first 31 minutes of the game Friday night with no success. But then the flood gates opened and the Tar Heels ran off six goals in less than 37 minutes to defeat Colorado 6-0 in the second game of the 1999 Nike Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field.
A crowd of 3,886 looked on as UNC assaulted the Golden Buffalo goal with six different players ending up in the goal-scoring column. The win boosted the Tar Heels to 4-0 on the season while the Buffs fell to 3-2. UNC sophomore goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett (Harborcreek, Pa.) earned the first solo shutout of her career as the Tar Heels outshot the Buffaloes 40-3 and won the corner kick battle 12-1.
Despite not scoring on their first 17 shots, the Tar Heels repeatedly finished scoring opportunities from the 32nd mainute of the match until the scoring finished in the 69th minute. The opening and game-winning goal was scored by sophomore striker Anne Remy (Norman, Okla.) at the 31:36 mark. UNC senior midfielder Rebekah McDowell (Lakewood, Colo.) took the initial shot on the flurry which was saved by Bassett. But Remy pounced on the rebound to score her second goal of the year.
It looked like the half would end that way but the Tar Heels pulled off a nifty passing combination to score their second goal with three seconds left in the first half. Sophomore defender Danielle Borgman (Cincinnati, Ohio) served a ball from the right sideline that freshman forward Susan Bush (Houston, Texas) headed back towards the center of the field. Senior striker Helen Lawler (Jupiter, Fla.) was their to finish the play as her header resulted in her first goal of the year.
The first 24 minutes of the second half was a non-stop flurry of action on the Colorado goal. Freshman striker Kim Patrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) scored her sixth goal of the year at 50:09, tapping in a cross with assists by senior defender Lindsay Stoecker (Raleigh, N.C.) and junior defender Kalli Kamholz (Indian Beach Harbor, Fla.). Patrick has scored in every Tar Heel game this season.
At 58:30, junior midfielder Raven McDonald (Benson, N.C.) scored her first goal of the season, heading in a corner kick by McDowell. Just 2:21 later, sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel (Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored her first goal of the middle, taking a cross by Remy and jamming it into the lower right corner. Freshman midfielder Elizabeth Ball (Dallas, Texas) also assisted on the goal.
At the 68:08 mark, Ball scored the first goal of her career as she stole a ball in the Colorado end, dribbled to her left and then fired a hard shot right at Bassett. But the ball bounced several feet in front of Bassett and shot like a rocket over the goalkeeper's right shoulder and into the goal.
The crowd was the fifth largest for a regular season game in Fetzer Field history. The first game Friday was a tense battle with 11th-ranked Duke defeating sixth-ranked Penn State 2-1 on a second-half goal.
Sunday's lineup with match Duke against Colorado at 1 p.m. and the Tar Heels against Penn State at 3 p.m. Between games, six Carolina alumnae who played roles in the 1999 United States Women's World Cup triumph will be honored. This group includes Mia Hamm, Cindy Parlow, Tracy Ducar, Lorrie Fair, Lauren Gregg and Wendy Gebauer. Fans are urged to arrive as early as possible because the game is expected to sellout. The World Cup ceremonies will begin immediately at the end of the Duke-Colorado game.
