SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Junior forward Meredith Florance (Dallas, Texas) scored in the 115th Friday night to lift second-ranked North Carolina to a 3-2 sudden death overtime victory over third-ranked Notre Dame before a crowd of 2,957 fans at Alumni Field on the UND campus. The game was the second of the day in the Key Bank Classic.
Florance's goal came off a throw in by junior defender Kalli Kamholz (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.) and it ended a marathon between two women's soccer heavyweights. Kamholz's throw in bounced off a Notre Dame defender and Florance pounced on the ball to score from in close.
The Tar Heels improved to 2-0 on the season with the victory while the game marked Notre Dame's season opener. The Tar Heel victory ruined a brilliant effort by Notre Dame senior goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene, who recorded a career-high 15 saves.
Carolina had barely forced the overtime period that led to Florance's heroics. With 2:56 left in regulation time, Carolina freshman forward Kim Patrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) tied the score on a 20-yard shot that took a strange hop over Beene into the goal. Sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel (Mahtomedi, Minn.) assisted on Patrick's goal.
The Tar Heels had taken a 1-0 lead at the 24:19 mark on a goal by sophomore forward Anne Remy (Norman, Okla.) who had entered the game less than four minutes earlier. Senior defender Lindsay Stoecker (Raleigh, N.C.) had taken a shot that was stopped by Beene, but Remy jumped on the rebound to give the Heels a short-lived lead.
Just 2:14 later, Notre Dame forward Monica Gonzalez score on a header in the box, assisted by forward Jenny Heft and midfielder Anne Makinen. The Fighting Irish then took a lead just 1:20 before haltime as reserve Mia Sarkesian score on a 25-yard shot that bounced off the post and into the goal.
Carolina dominated the statistics with 25 shots to 11 for Notre Dame and eight corner kicks to three for the Fighting Irish. But Beene's spectacular efforts kept the Tar Heels at bay most of the night. Freshman Jenni Branam has five saves in goal for UNC as she improved her record to 2-0 this season.
Carolina will play fifth-ranked Connecticut Sunday at 12 noon Eastern time to tip off the second day of the Key Bank Classic. The Huskies (0-1) were upset by unranked Duke (3-0) by a 2-0 score in the first game of Friday's doubleheader action.
