Women's Soccer Tops Tennessee In Season Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The new look University of North Carolina women's soccer team made its debut Wednesday night, employing a pair of goals by freshman forward Kim Patrick to ease past Tennessee 3-0 before 4,655 fans at Fetzer Field.
Missing 1999 United States World Cup participants Cindy Parlow and Tiffany Roberts from the starting lineup this year, Coach Anson Dorrance's team still looked dominant against the Lady Volunteers, firing 33 shots on goal vis-*-vis only four for UT. But the goal scoring came a little harder than usual until Patrick, a Pleasanton, Calif. native, came off the bench to spark the Tar Heels.
At the 28:02 mark, fellow reserve Tina Murphy, a junior defender, served a ball into the Tennessee box. Patrick trapped the ball, pivoted and deposited a bullet into the lower left corner of the Vol goal.
There would be no more scoring for over 22 minutes before UNC junior left wing Meredith Florance (Dallas, Texas) scored the second goal of the game from 18 yards out dead center, assisted by Danielle Borgman, a sophomore defender from Cincinnati, Ohio.
Patrick then finished out the scoring for UNC at the 71:03 mark, scoring off a corner kick initiated by senior midfielder Rebekah McDowell (Lakewood, Colo.). McDowell's corner kick was gathered in by sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel (Mahtomedi, Minn.) who punched the ball back into the middle where Patrick pushed it home from in close.
The crowd of 4,655 was the second largest for a regular season soccer game in the history of Fetzer Field, topped only by the 6,024 who saw UNC play Notre Dame on September 13, 1998.
The Tar Heels travel this weekend to play at Notre Dame in a tournament where they will meet the third-ranked Fighting Irish on Friday at 8:30 p.m. and the fifth-ranked Connecticut Huskies on Sunday at 12:00 noon.
