Women's Lacrosse Upset of No.2 Duke Falls Short

DURHAM, N.C. - The third-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team ventured to Durham Wednesday night looking to upset second-ranked arch-rival Duke but a goal by Blue Devil sophomore Kate Soulier with 2:47 left in the game game Duke an 8-7 victory over the Tar Heels.
The win was the first ever for Duke against North Carolina and improved the Blue Devils to 7-1 overall this year, 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Blue Devils have won six in a row since losing to #1 Maryland.
The Tar Heels fell to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. Carolina's three losses have come to the nation's #1, #2 and #5 teams, including a pair of one-goal defeats.
North Carolina jumped out first in the contest when freshman midfielder Christine McPike collected at goal at 27:21 of the opening period. Duke tied the match less than a minute later at 26:29 off a goal from freshman Kate Kaiser. UNC found the net two more times before Duke tallied three straight scores from sophomore Claire Finn, freshman Claire Sullivan and sophomore Amy Noble to give the Blue Devils a 4-3 advantage at intermission.
The Tar Heels jumped out quickly in the second half as junior midfielder Meghann Mohler scored at 28:48 and 25:15 to give UNC a 5-4 advantage. Duke battled back to take a 7-5 lead with goals from Sullivan at 24:27, senior Meghan McLaughlin at 23:54 and sophomore Kate Soulier at 16:56. But the Tar Heels werent through as senior defender Katie Loovis drove the length of the field for a score at 13:59 and Mohler collected her third goal of the evening to tie the match at 5:05. Soulier broke the tie for Duke with her second goal of the game and the game-winner at 2:47.
Carolina will meet 15th-ranked William & Mary (1-5) this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Williamsburg, Va. in its next game.
