Clay Hooper can't win a ballgame by himself, but he sure tried on Tuesday night as Carolina defeated the Campbell Camels 7-3 at Taylor Field on the Campbell campus. Hooper homered in his first two at-bats and drove in four of the Tar Heels first six runs.It also didn't hurt the Carolina cause that starter Derrick DePriest dominated the Fighting Camels from the mound. DePriest set his career single-game strikeout record by fanning eleven Camels. He did not give up a run in his seven innings of work. At one point with the bases loaded and only one out, DePriest was able to field a sharp ground ball and turn the rare 1-2-3 double play to get out of the inning. The start for DePriest, the Tar Heel closer, was his first of the season and moves him to 4-4 on the year. Relievers B.J. Finnerty and Ryan Earey came on to close out the game for the Heels, who did not allow a Camel to cross the plate until the bottom of the ninth inning.
Carolina moves to 29-8 on the year while Campbell falls to 20-19. Next up for the Heels is UNC-Charlotte on Wednesday night in Boshamer Stadium. Then, UNC will host ACC foe Virginia in a three game weekend series at "The Bosh."
