CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Jamie Pleyo scooped a loose ball into the net with 58 seconds left in the first overtime period on Tuesday afternoon to lift fourth-ranked James Madison to an 8-7 collegiate women's lacrosse victory over second-ranked North Carolina before a crowd of 250 at Fetzer Field.
The Dukes improved to 1-0 on the season while Carolina fell to 0-1. UNC held a 7-5 lead in the second half before JMU rallied to win by scoring the last three goals of the game. Jess Marion scored on free position shot with 2:41 left in the second half to cut UNC's lead to 7-6. Just 54 seconds later the Dukes scored on another free position shot by Megan Riley to tie the game.
The Dukes controlled the next faceoff and Julie Martinez almost ended the game in regulation for JMU but her shot in the closing seconds was saved by UNC's Debbie Castine.
James Madison won the draw control in overtime and scored 2:02 into the first period when Pleyo had the ball checked out of her stick by a UNC defender but she scooped the ball into the goal past Castine. Carolina never managed to get a shot off in either overtime period.
Riley and Marion each had two goals to lead JMU while UNC was led by Gray MacNair and Kellie Thompson with two goals apiece.
The Tar Heels return to action on Friday playing Ohio State in Baltimore, Md. at 6 p.m.
