BLACKSBURG, Va. - The seventh-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team ended a three-game road trip Wednesday afternoon, defeating previously undefeated Virginia Tech 18-5 at Rector Field House. The win broke a two-game losing streak for the Tar Heels and lifted them back above the .500 mark at 5-4. The Hokies lost for the first time this season, falling to 5-1 on the campaign.
A balanced offensive attack led Coach Jenny Slingluff-Levy's team as the Tar Heels exploded for a season-high 18 goals. Six different Tar Heels were multiple goal scorers in the game. Erin McGinnis and Kellie Thompson led the Tar Heels in scoring with four goals apiece, while Meghann Mohler tallied three goals and added four assists. Julie Kickham, Gray MacNair and Erin McInnes each had a pair of goals for the Tar Heels.
Tech jumped on the board just 34 seconds into the match on a goal by Dawn Will off of an assist from Catherine Augustyn. After UNC tied the match at 1-1, the Hokies took a one-goal lead on an unassisted goal by Augustyn with 21:31 left in the first half.
The Tar Heels then ran off five unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead before two goals by Jane Poole and one by Will cut the Tar Heels lead back to 6-5. However, that fifth Tech goal would also be the Hokies last of the game. UNC went on to score the last three goals of the first half and then the Heels ran off nine unanswered goals in the second half to turn the game into the final 18-5 rout.
Tar Heel goalkeepers Debbie Castine and Melissa Coyne combined to make nine saves in goal for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels will return home for the first time in 14 days when they play host to eighth-ranked Georgetown at 3 p.m. Saturday at Francis E. Henry Stadium on the UNC campus. The Hoyas bring a 7-3 record with them into the game on Saturday.
