CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Needing a win in the worst way, the seventh-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels exploded for four unanswered goal in overtime to overcome a gallant effort by eighth-ranked Georgetown as the Tar Heels won 10-6 in womens lacrosse action at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
The win was the second in a row for the Tar Heels and it boosted their record to 6-4, only the second time this season North Carolina has been two games over the .500 mark. Georgetown fell to 7-4 with the loss despite a ferocious comeback effort.
Carolina took the lead for good in the game when junior attacker Kristin Off took a feed from freshman attacker Erin McInnes and scored 40 seconds into overtime, putting the Heels ahead 7-6. Junior midfielder Gray MacNair scored an unassisted goal for the Tar Heels just 33 seconds later to boost the lead to 8-6 and later in the overtime McInnes and freshman midfielder Kellie Thompson scored open next goal for the Heels to run the final margin to four goals. Carolina won all six draw controls in overtime and possessed the ball for all but eight seconds in the six-minute overtime period.
The Tar Heels had led most of regulation time but the Hoyas never went away. Two goals by senior attacker Erin McGinnis and one by freshman midfielder Christine McPike staked Carolina to a 3-0 lead with 12:38 left in the first half. But the Hoyas closed to a single goal on an unassisted goal by Kate Ahearn and a free-position goal by Sarah Oglesby. McInnes reclaimed a two-goal lead for the Tar Heels with 2:06 left in the first half but just 13 seconds later Ahearn scored her second goal for the Hoyas and the teams went to the intermission with the Heels nursing a slim 4-3 lead.
Neither team scored for over 12 minutes in the second half before UNC sophomore attacker Amy Havrilla came off the bench to give Carolina a 5-3 lead off an assist by Off. But Georgetown came right back. Susan Stewart scored with 16:21 left in the second half, assisted by Sheehan Stanwick and then 13 seconds later Caitlin McLean scored an unassisted goal and the game was tied for the first time at 5-5.
UNC retook the lead on Havrillas second goal of the game with 14:08 to play but freshman Erin Elbe provided the equalizer for the Hoyas with 6:10 left in the second half. Eventually the two teams went to overtime and the Tar Heels exploded for their game-winning rally.
Sophomore Bowen Holden was credited with 14 saves for the Hoyas while UNC senior Debbie Castine had eight saves on the afternoon.
The key statistic of the game was in the draw control area where Carolina won 17 of 20 draws allowing the Tar Heels to dominate time of possession in the game.
Carolina will now be off for one week before the Tar Heels play at 17th-ranked Vanderbilt next Saturday at 12 noon in Nashville, Tenn.
