CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina Womens Tennis Team swept all singles and doubles matches en route to a convincing 9-0 victory over the University of Richmond Tuesday night.
After missing the spring opener and ACC Indoors due to sickness, top-seed Jessica Zaganczyk made her spring debut by defeating Elizabeth Cascarilla, 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Caroline Hill, the Tar Heels No. 2 seed, defeated Janelle Williams, 6-4, 6-4, while No. 3 Kristin Koening outlasted Amy Crocker, 6-2, 7-6 (6-5).
"Weve improved a lot from last year, considering we lost 6-3 to the same team a year ago," said coach Roland Thornqvist. "In singles, we played very well on offense. We did a good job of stepping on the court and taking balls in the air."
Fourth-seed Courtney Zalinski turned in a strong performance, defeating Catherine Hawley, 6-1, 6-0. Junior Jeni Burnette defeated Lindsay Woodworth in the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-4, and sixth-seed Cena Hackler outlasted Wesley Kohl, 7-6, 6-1.
In doubles action, Tar Heels Jessica Zaganczyk and Sarah Hawkins defeated Williams and Woodworth, 9-7, while Tar Heels Hill and Zalinski defeated Cascarilla and Hawley, 8-5. UNCs Burnette and Koenig beat Croker and Kohl, 8-6.
The Tar Heels (2-0) will return to action next Friday, February 19, when they play host to the University of Kentucky. The match will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
