CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The 23rd-ranked University of Kentucky women's tennis team won four of six singles matches in straight sets on Friday night and it went on to defeat the 54th-ranked University of North Carolina women's team 5-4 in an indoor match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the UNC campus.
The Wildcat women, who improved to 6-0 on the season with the win, clinched the match at No. 2 doubles when Brooke Skeen and Carolina Mayorga triumphed over UNC's Caroline Hill and Courtney Zalinski, 8-2. Leading 5-2 at the time, the Wildcats lost the other two doubles match but still emerged with their unbeaten record intact.
Coach Roland Thornqvist's Tar Heels fell to 2-1 with the loss. The Heels got singles victories from junior Jessica Zaganczyk at No.1 and junior Jeni Burnette at No.6, the latter win in three sets. UNC also won at No.1 and No.3 doubles.
Despite the loss, UNC showed significant improvement over last year's match when it was swept by Kentucky 9-0 in Lexington, Ky. Carolina's next match will be Friday, February 26, 1999 when it hosts the No. 18 BYU Cougars at 5 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Kentucky will play at South Carolina this coming Sunday.
