CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina's 48th-ranked women's tennis team scored an impressive 6-3 victory over 31st-ranked Texas A&M Tuesday afternoon. The Tar Heels led 4-2 after singles matches and then claimed the match with a win at #2 doubles by junior Courtney Zalinski and freshman Caroline Hill. Junior Jeni Burnette recorded her ninth consecutive singles victory by defeating Texas A&M's Kathryn Scott in the #6 match, 6-0, 6-3.
"Jeni is very tough mentally and has a very powerful will," said coach Roland Thornqvist. "Physically, she's gotten a lot quicker and stronger, which has enabled her to play great tennis."
At #1 singles, Carolina junior Jessica Zaganczyk blanked Martina Nedorostova, 6-0, 6-0, while freshman Caroline Hill defeated Texas A&Ms Monica San Miguel in the #3 match, 6-2, 6-0. Zalinski won her singles match as well, defeating Eva Marcial in the #5 match, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles play, Zaganczyk and junior Cena Hackler held on to defeat Texas A&M's Lisa Dingwall and Nedorostova in the #1 match, 9-7. At #3 doubles, Burnette and senior Sarah Hawkins lost a hard-fought match to Texas A&Ms Leah Killen and San Miguel, 8-6.
"We're playing outstanding offensive tennis right now," said Thornqvist. "There were a lot of times [Texas A&M] couldn't play their way out of those defensive holes. We're getting better."
Carolina improved to 7-3 with the win over the Aggies. The Tar Heels host Wisconsin Saturday in their second match of the four-match home stretch. Play will begin at 11 a.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
