UNC Drops 3-0 Decision To Texas A&M In NCAA Second-Round Play

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M senior middle blocker Amber Woolsey posted a match-high 16 kills to lead the 13th-ranked Aggies to a 15-8, 15-4, 15-8 win against No. 23 North Carolina in front of 1,263 boisterous fans Friday at G. Rollie White Coliseum. With the win, A&M advances to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Volleyball Championships, while the Tar Heels end their season at 28-6.
The Aggies led the entire first game, jumping out to an early 6-0 advantage before Casey Simpson put down a kill to put UNC on the scoreboard. A&M built a 9-2 lead before UNC rallied to get within three at 10-7. Following an A&M timeout, the Aggies came back and scored four unanswered points to pull ahead 14-7. UNC scored its final point on a Tori Seibert ace, but A&M regained serve and Summer Strickland posted one of her 13 kills of the match for the game winner.
UNC held a brief 2-1 lead in Game 2, but the Aggies went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 10-3 lead. A&M outhit the Tar Heels .345 to .244 and posted 23 kills to UNC's 16 as the Aggies went on to win 15-4.
A&M overcame another UNC 2-1 lead in Game 3 and built a 7-4 advantage. ut two A&M kill errors and a kill by UNC's Asa Gustavsson knotted the score at 7-7. The score also was tied at eight when the Aggies pulled away while holding the Tar Heels scoreless for the remainder of the game. Woolsey served an ace for the match winner and to send the Aggies to the Mountain Regionals.
Celia Howes added 11 kills for the Aggies and tied her career-high with a match-high 22 digs. Woolsey finished with a four blocks, and setter Jenna Moscovic dished out 48 assists.
Simpson led UNC with 15 kills and 14 digs. Gustavsson added 11 kills in the loss. Seibert led the Tar Heels with six blocks, and freshman setter Eve Rackham tallied 37 assists.
As a team, A&M outhit the Tar Heels .272 to .149, posting 60 kills to UNC's 47.
With the win, the Aggies improve to 27-5 and finish the home portion of the season with a perfect 16-0 record. Barring any upsets in the Mountain Region, A&M will face No. 3 Hawaii, Thursday, Dec. 9 in Honolulu.
