CHAPEL HILL, N.C.
-It took over 33 minutes for second-seeded North Carolina to get untracked Saturday afternoon in the second round of the 1999 NCAA Women's College Cup but once the Tar Heels hit their stride, the roof fell in on Central Florida.Junior Raven McDonald's empty net goal at 33:42 opened the flood gates and less than 47 minutes later the Heels had struck seven more times for an 8-0 victory before 1,875 fans at Fetzer Field. The win over the Golden Knights sets up a third-round encounter for the Tar Heels next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field against either William & Mary or Duke. Those two teams play at 1 p.m. Sunday in Williamsburg, Va. for the right to advance.
Freshman forward Kim Patrick and sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel each scored two goals Saturday as UNC improved its home record in the NCAA Tournament to 39-1 since 1982. The win was Carolina's 14th in a row during the 1999 campaign and improved the Tar Heels' mark to 20-2. UCF, which has earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament each of the past two years as champion of the Trans America Athletic Conference, finished its season at 16-6-1. The Knights had advanced to the second round with a 1-0 upset win at Furman Wednesday night in the initial round of the tournament.
After McDonald's opening tally, UNC struck again less than three minutes later as junior forward Meredith Florance scored at 36:04 to make it to 2-0. McDonald and junior defender Tina Murphy assisted on the goal.
In the second half, UNC exploded for six more goals. The first two tallies came from Patrick, who now leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in goals scored with 16. At 55:23, Patrick finished a picture perfect goal on a header off a cross by Florance. Senior midfielder Rebekah McDowell also assisted on the goal. Just a little over a minute later Patrick scored again, converting her second penalty kick of the year after a pushing foul in the box.
UNC would go on to score four more times in a span of 13:26. Kluegel scored two unassisted goals in that span, while junior defender Kalli Kamholz scored on a header from Murphy and senior defender Lorrie Fair converted a pass from sophomore forward Anne Remy into the final goal of the game.
UNC recorded 24 shots to four for the Golden Knights. Starting goalkeepers Maria Banuls and Jenni Branam of UCF and UNC, repectively, recorded eight and two saves.
