CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's soccer team routed William and Mary 5-1 in the third round of the NCAA tournament Saturday night at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels were led by senior Lorrie Fair as she notched two goals and one assist in a game that featured four first half goals by the Tar Heels before the Tribe could even muster their first shot attempt. Offensively, the Tar Heels dominated the match as they outshot the Tribe 15-2 and had a 6-0 advantage off corner kicks.
Opening the scoring for the Tar Heels at the 16:16 mark was All-American Lorrie Fair as she masterfully placed a 25 yard direct kick from the right side of the field past the outstretched arms of Tribe goalkeeper Michelle Horbaly. Fair would assist on the succeeding goal by freshman Kim Patrick as she headed a perfectly placed ball from Fair off a corner kick. That goal was at 20:10 of the match.
Sensational sophomore Anne Remy displayed her talents as she weaved her way past several Tribe defenders and slammed home her first goal of the evening from 20 yards out at the 35:53 mark. Remy would record her second goal of game in the first minutes of the second half off a cross >from teammate Meredith Florance. Fair added her second unassisted goal of the night off a penalty kick in the 39th minute.
The Tribe's lone goal came from only their second shot of the night as senior Missy Wycinsky gathered a pass from Lindsay Nohl and slipped it past Tar Heel goalie Kristin DePlatchett in the waning moments of the game at the 88:15 mark.
The win secures the Tar Heels yet another opportunity to play in front of their home crowd at Fetzer Field, who tonight set an all-time NCAA record for a non-final four matchup with 5055 in attendance. The Tar Heels will face the winner of the Clemson and Wake Forest game in a quarter final match set for 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 27th at Fetzer Field.
