CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The fifth-ranked UNC field hockey team beat Radford 2-0 Wednesday evening to improve to 10-2 on the season. The game was the Tar Heels' third in the past five days and their second consecutive shutout win. (Carolina lost 2-0 at Wake Forest last Saturday and won 3-0 at Duke on Sunday.) Radford fell to 2-11 on the season.
Sophomore Abby Martin scored the first goal of the game, on a penalty corner at 27:16 in the first half. Sophomore Abbey Woolley and junior Erin Cox assisted on the goal, the 11th of the season for Martin, UNC's leader in goals and in scoring (21 points). Woolley added a goal of her own, this one from the field and unassisted, 7:27 before halftime. UNC outshot Radford 22-3 and led 7-2 on corners.
"We won and had a shutout, but I was not very pleased with our performance," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We need to work on moving the ball better, work on our fundamentals, regroup a little."
The Tar Heels' next game is Oct. 12, when they host Wake Forest for a rematch of the Oct. 2 meeting. "We can't think too much about Wake yet," Shelton said. "We need to worry about ourselves and get our game in shape. Closer to Tuesday we'll worry about Wake."
