SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The third-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team received a scare from 24th-ranked San Diego Sunday afternoon but a goal by sophomore forward Anne Remy with 1:40 to play rescued the favored Tar Heels in a 2-1 win over USD at Torero Stadium before a crowd of 2,800. The contest was the final game in this weekend's USC/Puma Invitational.
Carolina improved to 9-2 on the season with its third straight win while the homestanding Toreros saw an eight-match winning streak ended and fell to 9-2.
Carolina scored a first-half goal against USD and appeared to be headed to victory but with 5:13 to play in the second half the Toreros struck on a goal by midfielder Jessica Crothers. That set the stage for Remy's heroics.
At the 88:20 mark, Remy combined with freshman forward Kim Patrick on a quick one-touch combination that resulted in Remy powering the ball past USD goalkeeper Leila Duren.
Remy also had an assist on the first UNC goal, which came at 36:15. That goal was freshman Susan Bush's third of the season. With Duren out of the goal, senior defender Lindsay Stoecker, who also had an assist on the goal passed to the left where Bush deposited the ball into the back of the Torero net.
That appeared to be all UNC would need until 84:47 when Crothers delighted the partisan crowd by taking a pass from midfielder Alison Benoit and beating UNC goalkeeper Jenni Branam with a shot into the left side of the goal.
Carolina had 16 shots on the day, while the Toreros launched nine shots, eight in the second half when they put a ton of pressure on the UNC goal. Duren was sterling in goal for USD by making six saves and keeping the potent Tar Heel attack on the defensive most of the day.
The Tar Heels will be in action again next weekend when North Carolina travels to Connecticut to play in the University of Hartford Invitational Friday and Sunday. The Heels will meet 12th-ranked Hartford on Friday at 7 p.m. and 1998 NCAA quarterfinalist Darmouth on Sunday at 12 noon.
