HARTFORD, Conn. - North Carolina's third-ranked women's soccer team broke open a close game with four goals in the last 48 minutes of play Friday night to defeat the 11th-ranked University of Hartford squad 7-1 in the Smashing Soccer Classic. The game was played before a near capacity crowd of 2,312 at Al-Marzook Field on the UH campus.
Carolina won its fourth match in a row and improved to 10-2 on the season while the Hawks suffered only their second setback of the 1999 campaign, falling to 7-2-2 overall.
Six different players lit up the scoreboard for the Tar Heels on a cool, clear evening in the Northeastern United States. Sophomore forward Anne Remy was the only player to scratch twice for the Tar Heels as the team's balanced offensive attack overwhelmed the Hawks. UNC took 24 shots on goal during the evening, while Hartford had only five shots. UNC had seven corner kicks to none for the Hawks.
Remy scored the first goal of the game, assisted by senior midfielder Beth Sheppard at the 4:03 mark of the game. A little over 10 minutes later, Tar Heel junior midfielder Raven McDonald scored what was eventually the game-winning goal at the 14:08 mark. Senior midfielder Rebekah McDowell sent a cross from the right side that McDonald gathered in on the face of the goal. Her powerful shot caromed off a Hartford defender and into the goal.
At the 34:28 mark, the Hawks got themselves back into the game temporarily when reserve forward Victoria Munro scored off an assist by senior midfielder Sandra Doreleijers. Doreleijers beat her defender and then crossed to Munro who one-timed the ball past UNC goalkeeper Jenni Branam.
The rest of the night belonged to Carolina, however. Just 2:29 before halftime, sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel boosted the Tar Heels' lead to two goals as she took a cross from sophomore forward Amy Whittier which deflected off a defender and powered a shot past UH goalkeeper Ingrid Sternhoff.
The Heels went on to explode for four more unanswered goals in the second half. At the 50:12 mark, junior forward Meredith Florance took a shot that was saved by Sternhoff but freshman forward Susan Bush punced on the rebound to give the Tar Heels a 4-1 lead. At 68:53 Remy scored her second goal of the night as Florance registered her second successive assist. Remy lofted a 20-yard shot over Sternhoff's head as the goalie was caught off her line.
North Carolina reserves tallied the last two goals. Whitter, who is >from nearby Fairfield, Conn., scored at the 77:14 mark, heading home a looping cross from freshman midfielder Elizabeth Ball. Carolina finished up the scoring at 81:51 when senior forward Helen Lawler followed her own initial shot which went off the crossbar, depositing the rebound into the back of the net.
Carolina will continue play in the Smashing Soccer Classic on Sunday at Al-Marzook Field in Hartford. At 12 p.m., #3 UNC (10-2-0) will play Dartmouth (4-4-0) followed at 2 p.m. by #2 Florida (11-0-0) against #11 Hartford (7-2-2).
