COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The University of North Carolina women's soccer team clinched the top seed for the upcoming Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Tournament by defeating Maryland 3-0 before 1,832 fans at Ludwig Field.
Sophomore forward Anne Remy continued her magnificant play for Carolina, scoring her fifth game-winning goal of the season (tops on the team) and her second game-winner in three days. She also added an assist on an insurance goal and is now tied for second on the Tar Heel team with 27 points. The victory was Carolina's 19th in a row over Maryland, all by shutout.
Third-ranked UNC improved to 15-2-0 on the season while winning its ninth match in a row. The Tar Heels are now 6-0-0 in the ACC and have clinched outright possession of first place in the ACC regular-season standings regardless of the Tar Heels' fate against #11 Wake Forest on October 31 in Chapel Hill. Maryland had a five-match winning streak snapped by the Tar Heels Sunday. The Terps are now 8-8-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the ACC.
Carolina got on the board first when Remy scored her eighth goal of the season at 13:19 on a shot that deflected off the post and rolled in beyond the grasp of Terp starting goalie Ali Wolff. Senior midfielder Lorrie Fair assisted on the goal. Sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel added the second UNC goal at 62:54 when she chipped a shot over backup keeper Riki-Ann Serrins, who had entered the game at halftime. It was Kluegel's sixth goal of the season. Freshman forward Kim Patrick added her team-leading 12th goal of the campaign with just 1:38 remaining as she took a pass from Remy and beat Serrins on a header >from five yards out.
UNC outshot the Terps 13-4 and had 12 corner kicks to one for UMD. Freshman Jenni Branam recorded a solo shutout for the Tar Heels, making two saves. UNC has recorded 10 shutouts in 17 games this fall. Wolff made three saves in the first half for Maryland and Serrins had four saves in the second 45 minutes.
Carolina will close out its regular season next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field against 11th-ranked Wake Forest. Maryland finishes its regular season next Sunday at Florida State.
The Tar Heels will play host to the ACC Tournament November 4, 5 and 7 at Fetzer Field. As the #1 seed, Carolina will play the #8 seed in a quarterfinal game on Thursday, November 4 at 6 p.m. Tickets for the tournament are available by calling the UNC Ticket Office at 1-800-722-HEEL.
