CHAPEL HILL N.C. - Wake Forest's defense was nearly impenetrable for the third-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team for over 64 minutes Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. But when freshman Kim Patrick broke through for her team-leading 13th goal at the 64:49 mark, it opened up the flood gates and less than 15 minutes later the Tar Heels had put three more goals up on the scoreboard to finish off a 4-0 victory over the 13th-ranked Demon Deacons.
The victory was North Carolina's 10th in a row and it allowed UNC to finish undefeated and untied in Atlantic Coast Conference regular season play for the fifth successive year. The Tar Heels will be seeking their 11th straight ACC championship beginning this Thursday when they play host to the ACC Tournament at Fetzer Field. Carolina heads into the event with a record of 16-2 overall and 7-0 in the ACC. The Tar Heels will be the top seed and will play eighth-seeded Florida State on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Wake Forest saw a three-game winning streak ended by the Tar Heels and the Deacons fell to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in the ACC. The Deacons will be either the #2 or #3 seed in the ACC Tournament depending on the outcome of today's Maryland at Florida State match. Regardless, Wake will play an afternoon quarterfinal game on Thursday.
Patrick's goal sparked the Tar Heel rally which up to that point had been blunted by Wake Forest sophomore goalkeeper Erin Regan, who finished with seven saves. In fact, Regan made back-to-back saves on a pair of close-in shots by UNC junior Tina Muprhy but the second save bounded out to Patrick, whose diving header gave her not only her 13th goal of the season but also her third game-winning goal, her first since September 5 against Connecicut.
Less than 10 minutes later, UNC senior midfielder Beth Sheppard sent a shot that bounded off a Wake Forest defender directly to Carolina junior forward Meredith Florance, who drove the shot into the upper right shelf. It was Florance's 10th goal of the season.
At the 78:14 mark, Carolina sophomore striker dribbled through a host of Demon Deacon defenders before rifling a shot from 12 yards out on the left for her ninth goal of the season. UNC finished off the scoring just 1:29 later when freshman defensive midfielder Leslie Gaston scored her second goal of the season from 13 yards straight on. Remy assisted on Gaston's tally.
