CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The third-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team returned to the friendly confines of Fetzer Field for the first time since September 19 Friday night and celebrated with a hard fought 2-0 victory over arch-rival North Carolina State before an appreciative crowd of 2,015 fans.
Senior midfielder Lorrie Fair was a factor in both goals as she scored her third goal of the year at the 5:59 mark and then assisted on the insurance goal at 55:31. With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 12-2 on the season and remained unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 3-0. The Tar Heels have won six matches in a row since losing to top-ranked Santa Clara 1-0 on September 24.
The Wolfpack had a three-match winning streak snapped by the Tar Heels and fell to 6-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the ACC.
The Tar Heels applied early pressure on the N.C. State goal and scored less than six minutes in when Beth Sheppard served a looping ball into the box that was flicked on by the head of Anne Remy. Fair gathered the ball and scored with her right foot into an open net.
Carolina got the second goal of the game when Fair threaded a pass through a gauntlet of Wolfpack defenders that hit junior forward Meredith Florance in stride. Florance dribbled the remaining third of the field, deked Wolfpack goalkeeper Jessica Glazer and scored into the unattended goal.
That was about the only time Glazer was fooled all night as she played brilliantly, making a total of 12 saves. UNC outshot the Wolfpack 27-3. N.C. State best chance to score came late in the second half when Kelly Blaggie intercepted a ball at midfield after a scramble just outside the box and rocketed a shot toward the empty UNC goal. But UNC defender Danielle Borgman stepped in to knock Blaggie's shot out of harm's way about 12 yards in front of the goal.
Carolina will return to action again on Sunday night when it plays 22nd-ranked Duke at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Wolfpack plays at UNC-Charlotte next Tuesday in its next action.
