HARTFORD, Conn. - Kristin Luckenbill of Dartmouth College proved beyond a shadow of a doubt Sunday afternoon why she was the preseason choice as the All-America goalkeeper in women's college soccer this season. But when all was said and done North Carolina's Lorrie Fair demonstrated why she is one of the best all-around players in the nation.
Fair's goal in the 117th minute of play Sunday afternoon lifted the third-ranked Tar Heels to a 1-0 victory over the Big Green in double overtime at Al-Marzook Field. The game was played as part of the Smashing Soccer Classic hosted this weekend by the University of Hartford.
Fair's goal finally ended the frustration for the Tar Heels who outshot the Big Green 34-4 and had 17 corner kicks to only three for Dartmouth. But Luckenbill, a junior who was a first-team All-America last year and was the preseason choice to win the award this year, made 12 saves to constantly keep the Tar Heels at bay. But eventually Fair, who has been injured a playing sparingly in the past two weeks, struck at the 116:47 mark to lift the Heels to victory. The goal came just 3:13 before the game would have been declared a tie.
Forward Anne Remy, who scored two goals Friday night in UNC's 7-1 win over No. 11 Hartford, triggered the play by launching a long cross >from deep in the corner. Fair gathered in the cross and punched the ball toward the goal as Lucknebill tried desperately to get to it.
With the victory, the Tar Heels improved to 11-2 on the season, winning their fifth match in a row. It was Carolina's last non-conference match of the regular season. Carolina finishes off its schedule with five straight ACC encounters, starting Friday night with a 7 p.m. match against N.C. State at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. The Big Green had a four-match winning streak halted and fell to 5-5 o the season.
