North Carolina volleyball head coach Mike Schall announced the addition of assistant coach Parker Mikesch to the Tar Heels' coaching staff on March 21, 2023.
"We're thrilled to welcome Parker to the UNC volleyball program as an assistant coach," Schall said. "His love for the game, for the people he works with and for the players he coaches is clear. I wanted to surround our team with people who would make an impact, and I feel we have done that with Parker.
His experience working with the staff and team at Louisville this past season, as well as his work developing young people at the club level, prepared him well to make this next step in his coaching journey. We're excited that he is with us in Chapel Hill."
Mikesch joins the Tar Heels after spending the 2022 season as the volunteer assistant coach at Louisville, who played in the NCAA National Championship game in December.
His duties with the Cardinals included assisting with opponent scouting, game-preparation, in-game scheming, in-gym player development, film study and practice planning.
"It's tough to express through words my gratitude towards Mike and the UNC athletic department for this opportunity," Mikesch said. "I fell in love with this profession because of the opportunity it presents to have an impact on student-athletes. Getting the chance to do that at UNC, an institution with such a storied academic and athletic reputation, is beyond special.
I'm looking forward to working with and learning from Mike, Rachel and the rest of the staff. Most importantly, I'm excited to work with this special group of young women. We want to create an unmatched experience for the student-athletes that compete within the Tar Heel program. I couldn't be more excited to get to work as I'm confident that the best is yet to come for Carolina volleyball."
Mikesch, who will work with Carolina's defense, played libero and was a two-time captain at Ohio State from 2019-2022. He finished his career as a Buckeye having played in 264 sets and 81 matches, tallying 57 digs, 372 assists, 10 blocks and three aces.
The numerous awards he received while at Ohio State include being a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, four-time MIVA Academic All-Conference honoree and three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten.
Mikesch also coached at the club level as a private lesson trainer and team coach at the Elite Volleyball Club in Columbus and the KIVA Volleyball Club in Louisville. There, he planed and ran individual lessons or group training sessions for variety of position groups.
