Went 4-3 in 13 appearances, including 10 starts, for the Tar Heels Fanned 40 batters in 48.1 innings Posted a 5.40 ERA Allowed just three hits and one unearned run over six innings to earn the win in the season-opener against Delaware State Also recorded a season-high seven strikeouts in that game Picked up his second victory of the season with six shutout innings against Liberty on March 12 Tossed a season-high seven scoreless innings in a win over Richmond on May 8 Also allowed no earned runs to bring home the win over Towson on March 25 Worked four innings versus East Carolina on April 23 for his longest relief appearance of the season.
As a Sophomore (2002)

Was 3-5 with an 8.46 ERA Made 14 appearances, starting 11 times Ranked fourth on the team with 32 strikeouts Got off to a great start to his college career with a win in his first outing, a start against Coastal Carolina on Feb. 13; held the Chanticleers to just one earned run on seven hits over 6.0 innings while striking out four batters in his Carolina debut Moved into the bullpen and appeared in relief in three of his next four outings before getting the start at VCU on April 4 and dropping to 1-3 with a loss Rebounded from that disappointing outing against the Rams, where he gave up three runs without recording an out, to have terrific outings in back-to-back mid-week starts Improved to 2-3 with six strong innings against UNC Greensboro on April 25 and got his third win of the year against Liberty on April 1; held UNCG scoreless into the seventh inning before the Spartans got on the board, but still managed to strike out five and give up only two runs on four hits for the win; had his finest outing of the year one week later against Liberty, setting career highs with innings pitched (7.0 innings) and strikeouts (8) in shutting down the Flames; held Liberty scoreless until a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh inning; finsished up the seventh without allowing another run in collecting his third win. Summer 2001: Played for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League Went 2-3 with a 3.50 ERA in 36 innings pitched.
