Appeared in 13 games out of the bullpen • Pitched two innings against High Point on Feb. 21 for his first career victory • Threw one scoreless inning against Wake Forest on March 16 • Pitched three innings and struck out two batters against VCU on April 4. Summer 2001: Played with the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League • Went 1-1 with a 8.71 ERA • Struck out 22 batters in 20.2 innings.
As a Freshman (2000)
Made three appearances • Pitched one perfect inning against Seton Hall on Feb. 26 • Also saw action against Western Carolina and Towson. Summer 2000: Played with the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League • Went 4-2 with a 3.25 ERA in 10 starts.
West Mecklenburg High School
Played four years of baseball for coach Jim McConnell at West Mecklenburg • Played pitcher, shortstop and outfield • Was the team captain and MVP as a senior • Named the conference, Mecklenburg County and Charlotte Observer Player of the Year in 1999 • Also selected first-team all-state as a senior • Went 7-1 with 106 strikeouts and 17 walks in 56.0 innings pitched in 1999 • Threw one no-hitter, two one-hitters and a pair of two-hitters • Equally proficient at the plate, hitting .419 with two home runs and 24 RBIs • Was an all-conference outfielder in his junior year • Recognized as a North Carolina scholar athlete in 1997, 1998 and 1999 • Earned a National Scholar Athlete Award in 1999.
