As a Sophomore (2002)
Compiled a 6-2 record as the team’s Sunday starter for the majority of the season • Made 16 starts and appeared in 21 games overall • Was second on the team with 83 strikeouts in 81.1 innings • Pitched 5.1 innings and gave up just one run on Feb. 16 against Seton Hall but did not receive a decision • Struck out a career-high 12 batters and got his first victory of the season in the second game of a doubleheader versus California on March 1 • Improved his record to 3-0 by pitching seven strong innings and giving up no earned runs in a victory over Florida State on March 24 • Struck out two of the three batters he faced in relief as part of a combined shutout at Charlotte on April 24 • Did not receive a decision despite having a strong outing against Miami on April 27 in which he pitched 7.1 innings and gave up just one earned run while striking out six • Helped the team avoid a sweep by striking out seven and pitching his first career complete game at Georgia Tech on May 19 • Rebounded from a poor outing against South Carolina in the NCAA Regional Tournament by pitching three innings of scoreless relief in the first elimination game against James Madison on June 1. Summer 2002: Was 2-5 with a 3.50 ERA and 51 strikeouts for the Chatham A’s of the Cape Cod League.
As a Freshman (2001)
Made 23 appearances as a freshman, the third most on the team • His 11 starts were the second most on the team and tied with Scott Manshack for the most by a freshman • His 65.1 innings pitched were the second most by a UNC pitcher, as were his five wins (5-5) • Collected wins in his first two collegiate starts • Pitched seven scoreless innings and gave up just three hits in his Carolina debut, an 8-0 win over William & Mary on Feb. 14 • Struggled in a relief outing vs. Minnesota in the Coca-Cola Classic in Mobile, Ala., but rebounded with seven more scoreless innings in a win over Seton Hall on Feb. 24; had a virtually identical line to his performance against Coastal, as he again gave up just three hits and struck out four Pirates to improve to 2-0 • Suffered three losses and two no decisions over his next five starts, including Carolina’s ACC opener against Wake Forest, to fall to 2-3 • Rebounded from his shortest start of the year, a one-inning outing where he took the loss at Maryland on April 6, to get a win versus Charlotte on May 11 • Followed that up with a mid-week win over No. 19 East Carolina (April 17) • Allowed three runs on three hits over 6.2 innings to defeat the Pirates and improve to 4-3 • Fell to 4-4 with a April 22 loss to Duke and had three outings without a decision before turning in a fine relief performance at UNC Wilmington on May 2 for his fifth win • Pitched the final five innings of a 3-2 non-conference road win over UNCW and allowed no runs and just two hits while striking out four • Ended the season with a loss to Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament; came out of the bullpen in the second inning and gave up seven runs — five earned — over 4.2 innings. Summer 2001: Played for the Chatham A’s of the Cape Cod League • Was 5-2 with a 1.02 ERA in 7 appearances • Named to the CCBL All-Star team.

Drafted in the 23rd round by the Florida Marlins • Played soccer, JV basketball and football in addition to four years of baseball • Twice led school to the conference championship and as a senior the team finished as the state runner-up • Two-time all-county, all-conference and all-state selection • County and conference player of the year as a junior and senior and named the 2A North Carolina Player of the Year in 2000 • Honorable mention All-America • Two-time all-conference and all-county selection for soccer • National Honor Society • Recognized as a N.C. Scholar Athlete all four years of high school and was a recipient of the N.C. Scholar Athlete Award in 2000. Honor graduate. Summer 2000: Played American Legion ball with Rowan County • Was 9-2 with a 2.40 ERA and team finished as the state runner-up.
