Softball Splits Doubleheader On Friday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina softball split a Friday double header with Marist and No. 22 Arizona State on Friday.

In game one, Carly Maxton threw an absolute gem. Going 5 scoreless innings of one hit ball, striking out just one batter.
Â
The bats had her back, after not scoring in the first inning, they put up four in the second inning behind a Rayna Blackwell three run homer and a Sanaa Thompson solo home run.
Â
In the third inning, the Tar Heels scored five runs with a bases loaded walk, and two singles. Thompson tacked on a fourth RBI in the fourth to go up 11-0.

Maxton came in for the fifth and closed things out for her second complete game of the season.

Game two saw Arizona State jump out to an early lead in the first inning, then two more in the third.

Lexie Roberts ripped a double down the left field line to score the first run of the game for the Tar Heels. Shelby Barbee continued her torrid stretch with an RBI single.

UNC pitching kept the Sun Devils off the board in the fourth and fifth innings, but they plated six runs in the final two frames to win 9-2.

Despite eight hits, UNC left seven runners on base which was ultimately the difference in the game.
