Tar Heel Men Fall At Virginia Tech, 4-2

BLACKSBURG, VA.—Virginia Tech won the doubles point and held on to defeat No. 65 North Carolina, 4-2, in an Atlantic Coast Conference match on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Tech took a 3-0 lead by following the doubles point by winning the first two singles decisions. The Tar Heels inched back in the match with back-to-back wins by Kase Schinnerer and Constantinos Djakouris to make the score 3-2.
The Hokies clinched the victory when Shumilov topped Ian Mayew in three sets, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
With the victory, the Hokies improved to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. Carolina lost its second match in a row and fell to 9-6, 2-3.

The Tar Heels will play on the road again on Sunday at Virginia. Carolina will begin a four-match homestand next weekend when it hosts Clemson and Georgia Tech on Friday and Sunday, respectively, in Chapel Hill.

• Drew Fishback and Frank Thompson grabbed the first doubles win of the day over Logan Zapp and Ian Mayew at No. 3 by a score of 6-2.
• Hokies Ilyas Fahim and Patrik Jurina topped Tar Heels Chris Xu and Niels Ratiu, ranked No. 34 in the latest ITA doubles rankings, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for Virginia Tech. Ratiu returned to the lineup after missing more than a month due to injury.

• The Hokies took a 2-1 team lead when Fahim stopped Xu at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
• Tech made it 3-0 with Jurina's 6-2, 6-4 win over Roan Jones at No. 2.
• The Tar Heels started to claw back with Kase Schinnerer's 6-3, 6-4 win over Hilsen at No. 5 singles, followed by Constantinos Djakouris' 6-1, 7-5 defeat of Fishback at No. 4.
• Shumilov clinched the team win for Virginia Tech with a three-set defeat of Mayew at No. 3 singles.
