CHARLOTTE, N.C. – North Carolina field hockey goalkeeper Tessa Shahbo has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
The graduate transfer keeper got the start for the Tar Heels in their regular season finale against No. 6 Duke and was excellent in marshaling her defense to help UNC to a 2-1 victory. The win secured the No. 1 seed in this week's ACC Championship for Carolina as well as a share of the ACC regular season title.
Shahbo, making just her third start of the year, made four crucial saves to keep the Blue Devils off the board. Carolina had jumped out to a 2-0 lead before a late fourth quarter goal gave Duke their only score of the game.
The Surrey, England native and her teammates will look to carry the rivalry win momentum into the 2026 ACC Field Hockey Championship, hosted in Chapel Hill at Karen Shelton Stadium. The first game for the Tar Heels will be against Stanford at 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
