Haynes Wins ACC Defensive Player Of The Week Honor
October 6, 2026 | Field Hockey
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – North Carolina field hockey senior defender Hope Haynes has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Â
Haynes played an integral part in the Tar Heels' 3-0 shutout win over No. 16 Louisville on Friday afternoon in the Derby City. It was a dominant display from Haynes and company, who only allowed the Cardinals to generate three total shots with just one going on cage.
Â
The lock down defense in Louisville continued a three-game trend for UNC of impressive solidity in the circle and beyond. Haynes and the back line, paired with Carolina's standard high press, have surrendered just eight shots and one goal in their last three matches.
Â
Haynes, in her second straight season as a fixture in the Carolina starting lineup, wins her first weekly honor from the conference office. She follows her teammate and captain Grace Pottebaum, who won the award last week. UNC keeper Merritt Skubisz also won the same distinction earlier this season while freshman midfielder Sofia Ferri won the offensive edition of the award.
