Vanderbilt Tops Men’s Tennis In ITA Kickoff Opener, 4-3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Vanderbilt defeated North Carolina, 4-3 in an opening-round match of an ITA Kickoff Weekend regional on Friday afternoon in Wake Forest Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels started strong, winning the doubles point and taking a 2-0 lead after a singles win by Niels Ratiu. The Commodores won four of the remaining five singles matches to take the 4-3 team victory.
How it Happened
• The Tar Heels took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Logan Zapp and Roan Jones started things off with a 6-2 ranked win over Vandy's #42 Danil Panarin and Jack Satterfield. After the Commodores won at No. 2 doubles, Chris Xu served as he and Niels Ratiu overcame two break points at 30-40 and 40-40 to clinch the point, 6-4, at No. 1 over Pablo Martinez Gomez and Hoyoung Roh.
• Ratiu dominated in his match at No. 4 singles, beating Jack Satterfield 6-3, 6-1, to put the Tar Heels ahead 2-0.
• The Commodores responded and tied the score at 2-2 with back-to-back singles wins at No. 5 over Zapp and No. 3 over #84 Ian Mayew.
• Constantinos Djakouris' 6-3, 6-2 win over Vandy's #94 Hugo Coquelin put the Tar Heels ahead, 3-2, but the Commodores tied the score moments later when #62 Martinez Gomez beat Xu at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
• The final team score came down to the match at No. 2 between #56 Jones and Roh. Jones took the first set, 6-3, before Roh followed suit with a 6-3 win in the second set. Roh broke Jones in the first and fifth games of the decisive, third frame, then held serve in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Roh eventually won the set by a 6-4 score.
