Gymnastics Sets Program Record In Season Opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 24 University of North Carolina women's gymnastics opened the 2026 season in a quad meet against No. 3 Florida, Temple and West Virginia Friday night in Gainesville, Fla. The Tar Heels set a program record for a season-opening score on the road, shattering their previous team record by 1.5 points. Carolina came in second at the meet with a team score of 196.675.
The Tar Heels started the night on bars where senior Gwen Fink recorded a team-high 9.875. As a team, Carolina recorded a score of 49.050.
The team's next stop of the night was beam. Yet again, Fink led the way for the Tar Heels with a score of 9.875. Carolina recorded a team score of 48.950 on beam.
In their strongest event of the night, UNC notched a team score of 49.350 on floor. Sydney Seabrooks highlighted the night with a score of 9.950 in her collegiate debut on the event. The freshman's score marks the third best in program history and earned her the floor champion title at Friday's competition. Jessica Naranjo also put together a strong performance on the floor with a score of 9.875.
UNC rounded out the night on vault. Kaya Forbes impressed as she recorded a team-high 9.925 on the event. The senior's performance earned her vault co-champion honors at the competition. JoJo Valahovic and Fink each notched an impressive 9.875 score on vault. As a team, the Tar Heels posted a score of 49.325.
After putting together an impressive, overall performance, Fink compiled an all-around score of 39.475. The senior's score earned her the all-around champion title. Fink topped opponents from no. 3 Florida and West Virginia to earn the all-around crown.
