Volleyball Moves To 2-0, Besting Coastal Carolina, 3-1

CONWAY, S.C. - Carolina volleyball extended its winning streak to six against Coastal Carolina 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17). For the second straight game, Carolina outperformed their opposition, outhitting them by nearly 200 points.
For the second straight game, Carolina has had three players with at least ten kills. The last time this happened was last year, when the Tar Heels had a four-game streak from October 25 against No. 19 Florida, which lasted until November 3 against No. 16 Georgia Tech. Safi Hampton and Chelsea Thorpe contributed to the double-digit kills streak last season and were responsible for the current one.
Hampton led the team in kills for the second game in a row with 15 kills. Hailey Pearce had 14 and Thorpe tallied ten kills. Pearce has opened her Tar Heel career with back-to-back games with double-digit kills.
Sienna Cozza made an immediate impact during her Tar Heel debut, dishing out 14 assists, which was good for the second-best total on the team.
Meghan Clifford was spectacular in her debut, racking up six kills and seven blocks in her first collegiate action.
In a repeat of Saturday's action, the Tar Heels battled in the first set as it was tied 22-22 before dropping the set 25-23.
Carolina bounced back, winning the second set 25-18, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and never giving it up despite Coastal tying the set twice.
The third set was another back-and-forth opener as the score was 7-7, before Carolina start to pull away behind an ace by Julia Bohlinger which sparked a quick 2-0 run, putting the Tar Heels in the driver's seat, as the Tar Heels went on a 12-3 run closing out the third set
The Tar Heels closed out the match with a series of extended runs. The first run was 5-1 courtesy of Pearce, which forced Coastal to take a timeout down 11-6. Coastal scored a point before Carolina, then went on another run of 9-2, taking a 21-9 lead before ultimately winning 25- 17.
Carolina opens its first homestand of the season, taking on Oral Roberts and Bucknell next weekend, starting on Friday, Sep. 5, through Sep. 7.
