Sheils Donegan Named To GB&I's Walker Cup Team
August 18, 2025 | Men's Golf
Niall Sheils Donegan, who is joining the University of North Carolina men's golf team this season, was selected to represent Team Great Britain & Ireland vs. Team United States in the 50th Walker Cup September 6-7 at the Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Â
Sheils Donegan was born in Scotland and moved to Mill Valley, Calif., at age 3. He played two seasons at Northwestern and transferred to UNC, where he will join head coach Andrew DiBitetto's squad this fall as a junior.
Â
Last week, he advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 United States Amateur. He was one of 64 individuals in the 312-player field to advance to match play, where he won his first four matches on the final hole. On Saturday, he was 2 down to Tennessee's Jackson Herrington with three to play and then won the 16th and 17th holes to pull even. Herrington then won the 18th hole with a birdie.
Â
The Walker Cup originated in 1922. Two years ago, a trio of Tar Heels – David Ford, Austin Greaser and Dylan Menante – led Team USA to a 14.5 to 11.5 win at The Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland. It was the USA's fourth-straight win in the competition.
Â
Sheils Donegan will become the ninth Tar Heel to play in the Walker Cup. The other eight all competed for the United States. In addition to Ford, Greaser and Menante, they include three-time participant Harvie Ward, two-time competitor Marty West, Frank Fuhrer, Davis Love III and Tom Scherrer.
The GB&I team includes Sheils Donegan, his former Northwestern teammate Cameron Adam, Eliot Baker, Dominic Clemons, Charlie Forster, Connor Graham, Stuart Grehan, Luke Poulter, Gavin Tiernan and Tyler Weaver.
