March 9, 2025 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina softball (21-4, 3-0 ACC) picked up a series sweep to open ACC play with an 8-4 win over Pitt (10-13, 0-3 ACC) on Sunday afternoon.
Like every game this weekend, Kat Rodriguez opened the scoring in the first inning. This time it was a home run to dead center to make it a 1-0 game right away.
In the third inning, Rodriguez came back up and knocked in another run to push the lead to 2-0. A few batters later Kiannah Pierce drove in Rodriguez with a double.
Sanaa Thompson came up in the fifth with a runner on and sent a ball deep down the left field line for her fourth home run of the season to give UNC a 5-0 lead. A few batters later, Raeghan Carlson drove in Pierce.
Kenna Raye Dark looked sharp for the first five innings, not allowing a run, but Pitt got to her in the sixth for four runs. She finished the day with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Carolina responded in the sixth with two runs to provide more cushion with a Carlie Myrtle RBI double and a Kiannah Pierce RBI single.
Pierce finished the day going 4-4 with two doubles and two RBI. She finishes the series with a .500 batting average and four RBI.
Britton Rogers was lights out for 1.1 innings, fanning two en route to her first save of the season. She threw 8.1 innings this weekend and didn't allow an earned run, only giving up three hits in the process.
Rodriguez's massive weekend finishes with a slash line of .750/.727/1.250 with seven RBI, and six runs. With runners in scoring position this week, she hit .833. She now leads the team in batting average, hitting .473 with an insane 42 RBI.
The Tar Heels look to carry this momentum into a mid-week matchup with Radford on Tuesday before hitting the road for the first time in ACC play next weekend against Clemson.
