Balanced Offense & Rogers Complete Game Power Softball To 8-0 Win Over Radford
March 11, 2025 | Softball
Â
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carolina softball (22-4, 3-0 ACC) ends its home stand on a four game winning streak with a midweek victory against Radford 8-0.
Â
Britton Rogers put up another pitching masterpiece. The senior tossed her second complete game shutout and third complete game of the season. At one point through the first six innings, she had retired sixteen straight batters.Â
Â
Offensively, the bats have done what they've done all season: strike early. Back-to-back RBI doubles in the first inning got the offense going and gave Rogers a quick 4-0 lead to work with.
Â
Kiannah Pierce drove home Sanaa Thompson and Alex Coleman, giving Carolina its 200th run of the season, which was achieved four games faster than last year's squad. Raeghan Carlson doubled down the left field line to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Tar Heels are now outscoring teams 47-6 in the first inning of games this season.
Â
Innings two through six were frustrating for the Tar Heels, who were able to get runners on consistently but weren't able to get any runs across.
Â
The offense came roaring back at the bottom of the sixth inning as Carolina loaded the bags. The Lexie Roberts hit a grounder and reached on a fielder's choice, which also had a throwing error, plating two runs and extending the lead to 6-0.
Â
Thompson tied the school record for most sacrifice flies in a single season with her fifth of the season. Carlie Myrtle ended the game with a run-rule walkoff single down the left side of the infield.
Â
The Tar Heels close a stretch with 19 of 20 games at home with an 18-2 record and an 18-1 record at Anderson Softball Stadium.
Â
UNC dominated at home over the stretch, outscoring teams 168-31. Pitching was a story throughout. There was a perfect game, two no-hitters, and 10 other complete games, including four other complete-game shutouts. The Tar Heels pitched to the tune of a 1.51 ERA and stuck out 104 batters.
Â
The bats slashed .411/.487/.610 over the 19 games at home, clubbing 20 homers and driving in 159 RBI.
Â
Softball heads to South Carolina for its first ACC road trip, which will be streamed all weekend on ACCNX from March 14 through March 16.
