March 8, 2025 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina Softball (20-4, 2-0 ACC) clinched the first ACC series of the season with a 9-2 win over Pitt (10-12, 0-2 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.
Britton Rogers went out and showed out throwing her second complete game of the season and the 14th by a Tar Heel pitcher this season. Rogers went seven innings of three hit ball, not allowing an earned run with seven strikeouts.
Kat Rodriguez continued her insane start to the season with an RBI single in the first to make it 1-0. The fast first inning continued with a sacrifice fly from Kiannah Pierce, then Raeghan Carlson smacked a double to make it 3-0.
Rodriguez tacked on a sacrifice fly in the second to push the lead to 4-0. The Tar Heels are now outscoring opponents 42-6 in the first inning and 114-22 in the first three innings.
Pitt got on the board with two runs in the fourth but Rodriguez responded immediately with a two-RBI single to push the lead to 6-2.
Rodriguez went 3-3 today with four RBI to push her season total to 40 for the year. Her 1.67 RBI per game has her on pace to shatter the program record for RBI in a single season which currently stands at 68. She also brought her batting average to .465 which is second best on the team amongst qualified hitters. She is now hitting .548 with runners in scoring position which is second best on the team.
Three more runs came across in the sixth with a Lexie Roberts double, Carlie Myrtle sacrifice fly, and then a little base running chaos after Sanaa Thompson stole second and Rodriguez came home on a throwing error.
That would be it as Rogers came and sat the Panthers down in order in the seventh to close things out.
Carolina looks for the sweep tomorrow at noon. The game will be streamed on ACCNX.
