Baseball Drops First Loss Of The Season

The Tar Heels' (13-1, 0-1 ACC) best ever start to a season under head coach Scott Forbes ended at 13 straight wins. It is the most victories to start the year for Carolina since 2013 when Hall of Famer Mike Fox's team went 16-0.

The bats got going early for Carolina as they pushed three across in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Kane Kepley, Luke Stevenson and Tyson Bass all came across to score to move the team to 20-4 in the opening frame this season. Stanford starter Matt Scott had given up three runs all year prior to this game.

Trailing in the bottom of the fourth, the Tar Heels put up three once again thanks a bases loaded walk from Stevenson and a two RBI single from Gavin Gallaher in the next at-bat.

The rest of the game went the way of the Cardinal, as the new entrants to the ACC used a six-run fifth inning to build their lead. It's the most runs Carolina has given up since last April 4 against Virginia.

Carolina tried to put a rally together in the bottom of the ninth when Perry Hargett drove in two with the bases loaded and no outs. A Jackson Van De Brake RBI cut the lead to four, but Stanford finished the game shortly thereafter.
