Auburn, Ala. – University of North Carolina divers Lanie Gutch and Aranza Vázquez Montaño punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships on the 1-meter springboard at the Zone B Championships on Monday in Auburn, Ala. Gutch placed second in the event while Vázquez Montaño took fifth. Divers needed to be in the top nine to qualify in the event.
Gutch qualified second out of the prelims with a score of 318.15 and held her place over the ensuing six dives to claim second overall with 631.45 points. Vázquez Montaño was sixth coming out of prelims with 299.5 points and improved one-place over her final six dives to land in fifth with 617.75 points. Having solidified qualification, these two just need to finish in the top 12 on 3-meter and platform to qualify for NCAAs in those events.
Ellie Joyce secured a 12th-place finish on the day with 544.60 points. If she finishes in the top seven on the 3-meter or platform, she'll subsequently qualify for NCAAs in the 1-meter as well. Sofia Knight just missed that same scenario, finishing 13th on the 1-meter with 542.10 points. Coming off an injury that has limited her practice time, Lara Phipps finished 40th overall in the event.
On the men's side, Christopher Booler challenged for the top eight needed to advance in the 3-meter springboard, ultimately placing 11th with 711.15 points over 12 dives.
