Track & Field Wins 11 Events On Final Day Of Dick Taylor Challenge

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina track and field dominated on the second day of the Dick Taylor Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 18. The team won ten different events.
Carolina went one and two in the men's pole vault as Paul Signorelli (5.25m) won the event, producing the 17th-best height in the country. Nick Pennington (4.87m) was the runner-up and notched a top 100 mark in the country.
Thomas Kitchell (18.87m) moved into third all-time in the men's shot put, passing Allen Bradd (18.71m) from 1999. Kitchell finished in second, but he had the furthest throw by a collegiate athlete. All four UNC shot putters advanced to the finals.
Carolina swept the 300m as Sydney Campbell (40.20) and Nick Sneed (34.87) won their event. Sneed made his Tar Heel debut.
The Tar Heels also finished with the top two times in the women's 1000m. Cassidy Scott( 2:51.27) won the race in her Tar Heel debut.
Aaliyah Berry (8.20) shot out of the gates in the 60m hurdles finals, picking up a PR and currently has the ninth fastest time in Division 1. She won the race, beating out 2020 Olympic Gabbi Cunningham.
Blaise Atkinson (7.90) PRed during the men's 60m hurdles, moving into sixth all-time, passing Marcus Krah (7.91) from 2018. Atkinson took second in the race but finished as the top college athlete.
Alyssa Hernandez (1:14.88) won the 500-meter.
Joe Sapone (2:22.15) won the 1000m with Aiden Neal ((2:22.27) taking second.
Patrick Anderson (4:04.83) led the charge during the men's mile, separating from the pack and winning the race by roughly five seconds. Carolina swept the first four spots.
After winning the mile, Makayla Paige (4:38.31) moved into seventh all-time, passing Lizzy Whelan (4:38.41) from 2014, as Carolina swept the first five spots in the race.
The success in the running event continued with a sweep of the women's 4x400 podium as Gwyneth Goldowski, Leah Spindell, and Aaliyah Berry, Makayla Paige (3:48.73) posted the 39th fastest time in Division 1.
