September 15, 2025 | Track & Field
TOKYO, Japan - Three former or current track and field athletes close out their time at the 2025 Track & Field World Championships.
The sensational 2025 track season for recent grad Ethan Strand came to a close as he fell two spots short of advancing to the finals of the men's 1,500m at the World Championships. Strand made his World Championship debut running the third fastest time of the opening round (3:36.27) and was the fastest American, which punched his ticket to heat one semi-final field, which featured three previous world champions. Strand battled in the last 200m of the semi-final of the 1,500m as he moved past four runners, before finishing in eighth, running his fastest time of the championships (3:36.15).
Obi Amaechi represented Nigeria in the women's discus, finishing in 16th place in flight one—Amaechi's best throw of her first, which went 55.69m.
The newest Tar Heel, Vera Sjöberg (4:06.01), finished seventh in the first heat of the women's 1,500m heats, one spot outside of the top six, which was needed to advance to the semi-finals. Â
Madison Wiltrout will compete in the women's javelin throw on Sept. 19.
