LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC field hockey team scored four times in the second quarter to take a 4-0 lead into halftime and then kept rolling for a 7-0 win at No. 11 Liberty on Sunday afternoon.
No. 2 Carolina improved to 6-0 while the Flames fell to 4-3.
Junior Ryleigh Heck finished with a hat trick plus two assists for an eight-point day. Sophomore Charly Bruder scored twice, and the Tar Heels got single goals from Sietske Brüning and Sanne Hak.
The gamewinner came in the 18th minute, on the first penalty corner of the game. Bruder had the score on assists from Ciana Riccardo and Katie Dixon. Brüning added to that in the 24th minute, blasting in a pass from Heck. In the 26th minute, Heck scored her own, hitting the post with her first shot then gathering the rebound and sending it just inside the far post to make it 3-0. Less than a minute later, Sanne Hak made it 4-0, scoring on a pass from Heck.
After carrying that advantage into the third quarter, Heck quickly made it 5-0 on a pass from Pleun Lammers just 90 seconds into the period. UNC added two more in the fourth, with Bruder batting the ball in out of the air on a rebound in the 50th minute, and Heck scoring on a reverse in the 56th minute.
UNC outshot the Flames 25-2 for the game and registered its fourth shutout in a row.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip out west to face the newest Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. After an open weekend, UNC plays at Stanford on Oct. 4 and at California on Oct. 6.
