Women's Golf Beats Augusta & UVA To Advance To NC State Match Play Finals

North Carolina's Inez Ng, Kayla Smith and Megan Streicher each went 2-0 today to lead the Tar Heels to a pair of wins over Augusta and Virginia to advance to Tuesday's championship match in the NC State Match Play at the Wolfpack's Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
UNC will play Virginia Tech in the final match, which begins at 9 a.m. The Tar Heels swept Augusta, 5-0, in the morning and edged Virginia, 3-2, in Monday afternoon's semifinal.
This is the third consecutive season Carolina has won its first two matches in this tournament to reach the finals.
Today's semifinal came down to a decisive match between, Ng, a sophomore from Singapore, and the Cavaliers' Rebecca Skoler, after Streicher and Smith gave UNC a pair of points with 4&3 wins.
Skoler took a one-hole lead with a par on 13, but Ng won four of the final five holes, including the 17th and 18th to break a tie for the winning point.
In the morning match, Streicher won the second playoff hole, the 20th hole of her match, to defeat Victoria Zheng and clinch the team point in the 5-0 win over Augusta.
Crista Izuzquiza and Ng won their matches 4&3 and Reagan Southerland won, 4&2. Smith took the lead in her match on the 16th hole and closed it out with a win on the 17th for a 2&1 win over Daniela Burgos.
"Our team loves the head-to-head format in match play," says UNC head coach Aimee Neff. "It's a different mentality. That probably starts with us as coaches, because KP (assistant coach Katherine Hamski) and I both love match play. It brings out the best competitors in us.
"As opposed to the last two years, this time we believe we were favored. We believe other people should be chasing us, instead of just being glad to be in this position. But we're not satisfied with where we are. We want to win tomorrow."
